S-biotica
Barcelona, Spain2021

S-biotica studio is a collaboration with Jessica Dias aka formalisedcuriosities & part of bio.babes, where we work within science & creative practices. Alongside, biological collaborators such as mycelium, plants, algae, organic waste, and site-specific natural matter. In an effort to make bio-design accessible to the entire community, we have set up the infrastructure, DIY tools, and resources necessary to work and design within materials and living systems. The project is based in Barcelona & focuses on biomaterial research and design (R&D), educational workshops and collaborations with industry, academia and creatives across different disciplines. Collectively we foment the exploration of biological systems, material narratives, and sensory experiences, as well as the iteration between craftsmanship and digital fabrication. We believe that material-driven design can empower us to build and inspire new material futures that nourish, comfort, console us and keep us (all) alive and thriving.

S-biotica aims to democratize knowledge on circular practices and material innovation by fostering that sharing processes, researching new methodologies, and interacting with materials can encourage us to reconsider our material world and its impact.

Be groundedBarcelona, Spain2018

beGrounded explores the relationship between humans and plants, as a sensorial and interactive experience, through a woven germinated garment. It aims to nurture empathy & coexistence at the same time that it enhances a critique of the fashion industry. It is not about clothing and its aesthetics but about the interaction within the growth process, from which it focuses on the experience, the exploration of the senses, and the emotional response of an hybrid habitable space.

The project also questions the bioethics of working with living organisms and the contemporary instrumentalized role we assign to plants.

During the process, a customized HILO spinning machine, a 3d printed wearable seed dispenser, a digitally fabricated loom and a greenhouse were built.

“Art is paramount in this investigation because it allows us to experience, feel and perform or visualize these alterities of being …that cannot be done through theoretical imagination alone. “
Encountering the Vegetal-being by Melissa Maria Lindqvist

Future wardrobe
Barcelona, Spain2020

Future Wardrobe is a partnership of artists, designers, and researchers who collaborate and research to propose new paradigms within the textile & fashion industry. The project intersects biomaterials, technology, and collaboration with living species to create speculative narratives of possible futures and raise awareness of opportunities related to rethinking our relationship with other organisms.

Our proposal is a living garment, creating a symbiotic habitable space for both: algae & human. As an embodiment of the multispecies philosophies, the vast multidisciplinary research led us to a garment as a discussion piece to raise awareness for the urgencies and opportunities of reconsidering ontologies, bodies, and affects.

Biosonification wearables, algae yarns, leathers, and pigments were developed during the process.

Living Textile Collective is an initiative of a group of researchers and textile practitioners that got together to investigate and develop the field around seeded textiles, intending to strive and integrate multi-species perspectives into our work as designers, artists, researchers, and bio-enthusiasts.

We consider textiles a conceptual and physical web of threads that weaves together different scales, materials, techniques, methods, disciplines, human and non-human earthlings. Habitable spaces that can be hybrid mediums for coexistence and the cognification of interacting within species. We believe that it is no longer sufficient to only address human needs and preferences when designing textiles, reinforced by the emergence of biodesign and the influences of eco-feminism and environmental philosophies.

Our network works as a platform to share our practices and the fascination of natural world, to become aware of the aesthetic changes within growth, to observe them over time, to feel and smell the transformations and to learn more about the physiology of plants. Furthermore we host discussions within and across posthumanism, feminist studies, and environmental humanities about the ethical, political, and cultural implications of our practices.

We reflect on a future where textiles for bodies and spaces are grown and transformed by seeds, that could be eaten, lie dormant, grow, transform, decay, and reemerge. In this imaginary, textiles become matters of care, modes to think and relate with the living, they are materials that are grown, they are ways of thinking, and mediators between people, plants, and other living organisms.

Our explorations not only relate to the scale of textiles for fashion, interior or architecture but also inspire philosophical enquiries and metaphors beyond a purely human focus, leading to an understanding of the textile design practice as a way of being-with and staying-with, rather than as a solution-driven practice (Keune, 2021).

Whatever happens on the “scale” of the textile creates ripples in our everyday life; the clothes we wrap our bodies in, the textiles we furnish our homes with, and the materials we build buildings of. Consequently, textiles and biodesign have the potential to challenge our ways of living and interacting. Indeed, they let us experience the ontological vision of the material turn in an embodied way: bodies (human, textile, bacteria) relating with and shaping each other into constellations of things, lives, events, and concepts (Iovino, 2012).

In 2022, we hosted the Living Textile Collective Camp that brought us together under the i-Portunus grant with the main objective of connecting and co-creating. The physical gathering of the diverse creative profiles, after more than a year of communicating online, allowed us to develop a 10 day workshop at Hvalsø, Denmark.

Barcelona, Spain2021

Síncresis proposes an approach to other forms of life, revealing the invisible universe of its electrical stimuli, in the search for alternative communications. In this project we work on making the different vibrations visible through an installation where the microenergetic fluctuations of mushrooms are translated into mediums recognizable to humans: variations of sounds and light gradients.

As an embodiment of the collective planet-centered philosophy, interspecies speculation acts to create a dialogue of consciousness about empathic relationships with other beings who share this earth. They communicate too, but they do so in ways that the human sensory spectrum cannot perceive (yet).

We understand this co-creation as a dialogue - based on oscillations and synthesis - creating a soundscape from the biodata of its manifestations.
